Dear Bothers, Sisters and Friends,

I'm sure a lot of you have heard about our crisis here at Communication Workers of America (CWA) Local 1365 and our represented membership, the production and trade employees of Lucent Technologies in North Andover, Massachusetts. For those of you who are not familiar here's a quick recap.

Lucent Technologies has destroyed their business and they are now desperate for cash and thus are selling and dumping everything they can, that includes our facility here in North Andover. We have already suffered job losses here in the last few months numbering close one thousand and we fear that is not the end. Recently Mike Jones, Vice President of Manufacturing announced, through the media, that Lucent's intent is to sell the North Andover facility and the job loss here at Merrimack Valley Works (MVW) would be between 1,600 to 1,800. The news article suggested that Mike Jones said he hoped those who get laid off because of this sale would have the opportunity to be rehired with the contract manufacturer. Many of us believe that type of plan can mean only one thing, the company intends on firing us all here before the sale to null and void our contract. We might then have the opportunity to get hired by the subsequent employer, of course without union recognition or the union contract. As you can well imagine this plan is totally unacceptable to our union and our local. To be re-employed under those conditions generally means a cut in wages, no or limited benefits, no pensions, healthcare, etc. We would be expected to start our careers over again from square one after many of us have worked at the MVW facility for up to twenty or more years.

What we are asking all our friends, their families, politicians and members of the community to do to help us save our jobs, union recognition and union contract is to write a letter to Henry Schacht, Chairman and CEO of Lucent Technologies and Mike Jones, Vice President of Manufacturing. The letters we're requesting are an action to urge them to include in any sales agreement of the North Andover facility the recognition of the union and the migration of the union contract. I have included two sample letters for you to review and also a cover sheet emphasizing the points we would like made. We will certainly appreciate any efforts you take on our behalf in regards to our crisis with Lucent. A point that should be made here is, the destruction and elimination of our jobs at MVW does not only effect us, but in fact, negatively, effects the entire community.

If you would like, I am available to speak to your Executive Board, members, congregations or groups on this issue. If you would like further information or have any questions about this issue or would like to schedule a speaking engagement please feel free to contact me at your convenience. I am,

Sincerely yours,

Gary Nilsson, Secretary CWA Local 1365
