Solidarity Letter:

Justice for the Freightliner Five

Dear brothers and sister,
We have been informed that as a result of a strike by United Auto Workers Local 3520 Freightliner members in April 2007 over health and safety and other conditions and benefits, the management of Freightliner in Cleveland, North Carolina has terminated five UAW strike leaders, all of you members of the local union’s bargaining committee and three of you members of the executive board.

This is outrageous. The need to prevent retaliation of union leaders for defending their members is critical in not only defending the local. We understand that it is also about showing workers throughout the American South that for the labor movement an injury to one is an injury to all.

We have been informed that you have been cut off from your unemployment benefits, and have been unemployed since April 3, 2007. You are fighting to continue your struggle for justice.

An injury to you is also an injury to us! In the “Integrity Code” of Daimler it is written: “Daimler acknowledges the human right to form trade unions. During organization campaigns the company and the executives will remain neutral (…). Daimler respects the right to collective bargaining. Elaboration of this human right is subject to national statutory regulations and existing agreements. Freedom of association will be granted even in those countries in which freedom of association is not protected by law. Cooperation with employees, employees’ representatives and trade unions will be constructive. (…) Even where there is disagreement, the aim will always be to work out a solution that permits constructive cooperation in the long term.“

Your firing is a clear abuse of the company’s own code. Thereby, we call for the immediate re-employment by Freightliner of fired UAW Local 3520 union leaders and members Robert Whiteside, Allen Bradley, Franklin Torrence, Glenna Swinford, and David Crisco
